Cartagena Guide: Cold Beer and Salsa Music

Culture and Nighlife Cartagena is music, everywhere and anytime. You will listen to music in public transport, streets, bars and even offices. Latin Music in its different flavors dominates the local taste: From Champeta, to Vallenato, Latin Rock or localized Reggaeton. But the most loved music still is the Salsa Music of the 70's and 80's with its heroes like Hector Lavoe, Willie Colón, Ruben Blades, Celia Cruz and -last but not least- Cartagena born Joe Arroyo.
In despite of the impressive local talent and the importance music has for Colombian people, there are very few live music events. We will give you some hints on where to find Salsa and Son Cubano, live or recorded.

Maybe the best concerts are free shows on Plaza Aduana: The City of Cartagena organizes several events every year with free live music. Mostly during November holidays, on Cartagena's city birthday or on special events like "teachers day" you have a chance to see free live bands playing Salsa Music on Plaza Aduana. On this years Cartagena's anniversary -for example- you could listen to Joe Arroyo, free and kind of exclusive: These events are usually poorly announced and promoted by word of mouth. You won't find them in an event calendar - the only recommendation is to keep your ears open. Its worth it.

Another highlight of Cartagena's music is the orchestra or Teatro Heredia, "Kalamari Big Band". The band uses to perform the national beauty competitions final show as well as on concerts in the beautifully restored local theater. Once again: Just keep your ears open, its worth it!

In many bars and restaurants you can find excellent live musicians playing: Maybe the most exciting local band is playing Thursdays until Saturdays in upscale place "Comarca", near Plaza Santo Domingo. Listen to Salsa, Son, Tangos and Boleros surrounded by antiques. No cover charge but steep prices! "Cafe Havana" on Calle de la Media Luna, Getsemaní, hosts Cuban live music on every sunday. Excellent music, beautiful atmosphere, no cover charge and reasonable prices.

Dancing Salsa? - Most discos in Cartagena are not tied to certain kinds of music: They play whatever makes people move, including Salsa. But only a few nightclubs cater exclusively to Salsa Music. In these places you will find excellent dancers and a wonderful atmosphere. Some of these clubs are far outside on the "Avenida", not the most recommended area for a foreigner to be at night. Right in the center the traditional salsa discotheque is "Quiebra Canto" on Parque Centenario. Two minutes walk from the clock tower building you will find this Salsa nightclub. Mostly visited by local Salsa dancers, located in the second floor you may dance, watch dancers or just enjoy the view from the balcony.

If you are not into nightclubs but enjoy pure Salsa Music and cheap beer: There are several bars in Cartagena playing exclusively Salsa Music. Most famous and hard to miss is "Donde Fidél" on Plaza de los Coches. This place not only plays best Salsa Music, but also is one of the few places affordable to common Cartageneros in the Old Town. You can sit in the crowd outside, watch carriages, people walking by or street artists while listening to music. Or you can go inside, watch Salsa videos on a big screen. Though this is not a disco nobody will stop you from dancing. Another palace well known for its exclusive Salsa Music is "La Esquinita de San Diego": A small and friendly place located in Calle 7 Infantes, Barrio San Diego, mostly frequented by local people in search of cheap beer and good Salsa. Though the bar can become very crowded the Salseros always find some place to dance. Highly recommended!
